The MDS review of the Vaillant Ecotec Plus 838 Combination boiler
Since 2015 there has been a raft of new boiler models launched by different manufacturers including Vaillant. The reason being is compliance with the new ERP regulations (energy related products) the point of ERP is to give clear guidance on energy efficiency and also improve boiler performance. The boiler must be labelled in a specific way so the layperson can easily understand and compare products. All leading manufacturers have now invested heavily in ERP and Vaillant was at the forefront of this new regime.
The Ecotec Plus 838 combi boiler
The 838 is a powerful combi boiler which is an improvement on the earlier popular boiler the Ecotec 837. The 838 is a wall mounted combi boiler which is mains water fed and has all its own controls and equipment self-contained in one unit excluding external room thermostats. Considered a larger combi boiler and the 838 Ecotec Plus is designed for performance of hot water and larger heating systems.
What kind of property is the 838 suitable for?
The new Ecotect 838 puts out 28KW to the heating circuit which is easily suitable for a good sized 3 or 4 bedroomed house with a bathroom and an ensuite. The 838 is a powerful boiler and will cope with big heating systems and large hot water demand. Not a boiler for a standard flat. Only if hot water flow is the priority should you consider the 838 for smaller properties as it would not be the most economical option. For exceptional high hot water flow requirements you could consider the 938 Ecotec Plus which is a storage type combi boiler and a much larger beast.
High efficiency with operation over 89%
Instant hot water demand with fast heat up time.
Improved performance and better modulation
Smart appearance and a compact size 440mm x 720mm x 406mm
Fully compatible with all of Vaillant controls including VSmart
28KW Central heating output and a hot water flow rate of 15.9 litres per minute @35 Degrees C
Note MDS always likes to point out that reducing the flow rate by about 10-15% will give a more realistic operating temperature.
In summary the new Vaillant Ecotec Plus 838 is a top of the range market leading boiler with exceptional hot water performance. A big company brand backing and long warranties. This boiler is designed for larger properties and should last many years when installed by a Gas Safe engineer. MDS strongly suggest that a central heating engineer checks mains water flow rates and incoming gas supplies to ascertain suitability.
